Quick overview
Trezor keeps your private keys offline in a hardware device so you can sign transactions securely. The start process walks you through downloading Trezor Suite (desktop recommended) or continuing in the browser, connecting your device, creating a PIN, and recording your recovery seed. Total setup time is typically short and guided on-screen.
Before you begin
- Only download Trezor Suite from the official Trezor website or use the official web app.
- Prepare a clean, private workspace and something to write your recovery seed on (paper or a metal backup).
- Have your computer and the Trezor USB cable ready.
Step-by-step setup
- Download or open Trezor Suite: Choose the desktop app for your OS or click “Continue in browser” to use the web-based suite.
- Install and launch: (If using desktop) install Trezor Suite, then launch the app and choose “Set up new device.”
- Connect your Trezor: Plug the device into your computer using the official cable. Follow the on-screen prompts.
- Create a PIN: Choose a secure PIN that you can remember; this protects the device if it’s physically lost or stolen.
- Write down your recovery seed: The device generates a 12–24 word recovery phrase. Write it down exactly in order and store it offline. This is the only way to restore access to your funds if the device is lost or damaged.
- Verify addresses on-device: Always confirm receive addresses and transaction details on the Trezor screen before sending or receiving funds.
- Migrate or receive funds: Move crypto from exchanges or other wallets to your Trezor-managed addresses when you’re ready.
Security best practices
- Never share your recovery seed with anyone. Trezor staff will never ask for it.
- Store the recovery seed offline in a secure location (consider a metal backup for long-term storage).
- Enable an optional passphrase for an extra hidden-wallet layer if you require additional security.
- Keep firmware and Trezor Suite updated to benefit from the latest security improvements.
- Be vigilant against phishing: always verify you are using the official site or app.
